THERMAL RESIDUAL STRESSES AND STRESS DISTRIBUTIONS UNDER TENSILE AND COMPRESSIVE LOADINGS OF SHORT FIBER REINFORCED METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES

Abstract
Thermal residual stresses and their effects on the stress distributions under the applied tensile and compressive loadings were studied by using the deformation model proposed in paper1. It was demonstrated that the residual stresses in the matrix and the fiber can reach considerably high magnitudes and resulTin asymmetrical stress distributions and matrix plasticity under the applied tensile and compressive loadings. Thermal residual stresses reduce the stress transfer in tension and enhance the stress transfer in compression.
