Abstract: Based on the Eshelby's inclusion theory an analytical model is proposed to analyze the influence of a free surface on stress distribution for a particle reinforced material. The perturbed zone for the residual stress and the formation of the surface crack in the presence of a free surface are also discussed in detail.
