INTERFACE MODIFICATION OF THE ALUMINUM BORATE WHISKER REINFORCED 6061Al COMPOSITE

Abstract
In the present paper a sol gel γ Al2O3 coating method was employed to modify the interface properties of the aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al composites. Results indicate that an alumina coating with a thickness of about 40nm can be obtained on the aluminum borate whiskers. And due to the nearly continuous brittle spinel product by aluminum borate whisker and the matrix, the structure continuity of the whiskers has been greatly destroyed after the squeeze casting process. Although γ Al2O3 coating can't totally hinder the interfacial reaction, it effectively constrains the spinel reaction and preserves the structure integrity of the aluminum borate whisker.
